Goat Milk Soap Benefits and Frequently Asked Questions

How is this soap made?

Our soap starts with raw goat milk from our three does Dottie, Duchess, and Sundae and a custom blend of oils.  The oils are then saponified (turned into soap) by the addition of lye (a practice that has been around for at least 4800 years!). Our soaps are poured into molds and allowed to rest for several days before being cut into bars.  These bars then cure for at least four weeks, ensuring that you receive the best quality soap.

What is in handmade goat milk soap?

In general, all of our soaps are made with raw goat milk, cocoa butter, sustainable palm oil, coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, olive oil, sodium hydroxide (lye), sodium lactate.  Additionally, some bars may contain colorants, fragrance or essential oils, and/or other additives.  These will always be listed both on the sales page and the packaging.

What are the benefits of goat milk?

Many customers tell us that they find milk soaps to be much more gentle than commercial soaps created with surfactants.  Goat milk is noted to be much richer in butterfat than other milks and has a similar pH to human skin, creating a soothing lather.  Goat milk is rich in vitamins and minerals including Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, and E as well as selenium, magnesium, and potassium.  Goat milk also contains lactic acid, caprylic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids along with proteins and fatty acids.  The addition of goat milk to soap has been found to be highly beneficial to skin while not compromising cleansing ability.

What do you mean by sustainably and ethically raised goats?

Our goats are managed with their well being as the top priority.  We follow conservative breeding practices to ensure that their health is not compromised for milk production.  We maintain a closed herd and complete annual biosecurity testing.

Why do you use colorants and fragrance oils?

This is simply personal preference.  We enjoy the creative freedom that colorants provide to our process.  We also prefer the scent retention that fragrance oils provide, as essential oils often dissipate when utilized in cold process soap.  All of the fragrance oils we use are phthalate and paraben free.  We only purchase from reputable suppliers and follow all company and International Fragrance Association (IFRA) safe use guidelines.  We do carry soaps that are made with only essential oils and natural colorants as well!

Isn't palm oil bad for the rainforest?

When produced unsustainably, palm oil production can negatively impact the environment and the community.  However, no other vegetable oil is as versatile or productive as palm oil.  The palm oil trade is important to the wellbeing of the communities that produce it and supports 2.9 million jobs worldwide.  Supporting the sustainable palm oil industry helps to protect wildlife, limits carbon emissions, and helps to reduce deforestation.  We are committed to only sourcing palm oil that is certified sustainable in cooperation with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).  Learn more at www.rspo.org.

Can I custom order a soap?

Yes! We love working with our customers, they have the BEST ideas!  Custom bar soap orders require for an entire batch (9 bars) to be purchased.  Additionally, we can work with you to create molded soaps for favors, gifts, etc!

Do you make any allergy friendly soaps?

Yes! We do make unscented and colorant-free soaps.  If you do not see a listing available, please just ask!

But do you really milk the goats yourself?!

Sure do!  We milk by hand twice a day, every day through milking season.  Trust us, our ladies would let you know if we didn't!
